INDEX/CONCORDANCE OF INDIVIDUAL HOUSES AND SHOPS FOR POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, AND NEIGHBOURING AREAS

A complete list of every house or shop specifically mentioned or illustrated by name or address in The World of Pompeii was too large and unwieldy to include in the printed index. This electronic version also has the advantage of being easily searchable. Each is listed with the English name used in the book and its address. Buildings have often been given several names throughout the history of scholarship; their Italian names are in fact most commonly used in scholarship. Houses or shops without given names are listed by their address only. For concordences of names and addresses, one should first consult H.B. Van der Poel (ed.), Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum, Pars II, Toponymy, Rome, 1983, and L. Eschebach, Gebäudeverzeichnis und Stadtplan de antiken Stadt Pompeji, Köln, 1993. Other helpful lists and concordances are: W. F. Jashemski, The Gardens of Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Villas Destroyed by Vesuvius, vol. 1, 1979 (the index); vol. 2, 1993; L. Richardson, jr, Pompeii. An Architectural History, Baltimore, MD, 1988, pp. 435-38; the Guida Laterza, Pompei Ercolano Stabia, Rome, 1982; The House Name Index at Pompeii in Pictures. See also p.621 in the book.
