AMERICAN RESEARCH CENTER IN SOFIA SUMMER ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAM, 2014

ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL AT HERACLEA SINTICA WITH EXCURSIONS TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN BULGARIA, MAY 31 – JULY 7, 2014

The American Research Center in Sofia (www.arcsofia.org) is pleased to announce the third summer Archaeological Field School at Heraclea Sintica (Bulgaria).

Students will arrive in Sofia on May 31 and will spend two full days exploring the archaeology and history of this beautiful city. On June 3, the team will begin an archaeological journey, visiting sites and museums in Veliko Tarnovo, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv and other smaller sites. We will arrive in the city of Petrich or Sandanski on June 7, the home base of the ARCS excavations at Heraclea Sintica. The excavation team will reside in a hotel in Petrich or Sandanski during the 4-week excavation season. Archaeological work is conducted Monday-Friday with additional excursions to southwest Bulgaria, northern Greece and Republic of Macedonia on Saturdays. The team will be accompanied back to Sofia on July 6, where they will stay one night, departing from Sofia on July 7.

BINCHESTER ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT

The Binchester Archaeological Project is accepting applications for its field school (through Durham University UK and Vinovium.org) until 1 May. Cost is $4500 for four weeks. Accommodation at Durham University, all meals, field trips, internal travel, lectures, lab work, and archaeological training are included in the fee. Transport to Durham is not included.

Please note that we also offer a new, optional training program in pottery and ceramics that will launch this season. Interested students can elect to focus on pottery studies during their time with the field school and receive individual training from our ceramicists. Or they can split their time between the trench and this specialized training.

Excavating the Baths at Carsulae

EXCAVATIONS OF THE BATHS AT ROMAN CARSULAE
June 16 – July 27, 2013

We are now accepting applications from students and volunteers to participate in our ninth season of excavations of the baths at Roman Carsulae.

Project and Location
Carsulae was a Roman city that developed in the late third century BCE along the Via Flaminia, approximately 100 kilometers north of Rome in modern Umbria. The major public buildings of Carsulae were excavated from 1950 to 1970, but most of the ancient city still lies undisturbed in what is now a beautiful archaeological park. The current excavation of the public baths at Carsulae began in 2004. We plan to dedicate the 2013 season to excavating the remainder of the areas beneath the protective roof, and also to developing a long-term plan for the conservation and partial restoration of the bath complex. ROMARCH: Roman-period Archaeological Field School in Umbria: Vicus ad Martis

Announcing the sixth season of the Vicus ad Martis Tudertium Archaeological field school in Umbria, Italy. Run by Drew University and directed by Prof. John Muccigrosso, this four-week program offers hands-on archaeological experience – and four credits – to college-age students. Non-students may also participate through the project’s Visitors program.

The excavation takes place at the site of the Roman town of the Vicus Martis Tudertium, located on the Flaminian Way, not far from the city of Todi. The 2013 season runs from June 9 – July 6 and in addition to daily work on the site includes short excursions to nearby sites, as well as an immersive experience in small-town life in modern Umbria.

The Howard Comfort, FAAR’29, Summer School in Roman Pottery

Potsherds constitute the most frequent group of finds on archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Pottery usually offers the most important evidence for dating sites. Furthermore, ceramological databases provide a good source on issues ranging from trade relations to the consumption patterns of food and questions of identity.

The Summer School in Roman Pottery Studies is a five-week program designed to present the basics of Roman pottery studies, which can be gained only through direct contact with ceramic assemblages. Since the School’s establishment in 2006 to honor the memory of Howard Comfort (a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and an eminent scholar of Roman pottery), it has gained a reputation as the premier venue for introducing aspiring scholars to the field, and its alumni are increasingly in demand on projects in Italy and elsewhere.
